Two People Almost Died at RAADfest. We Went to the Experts.

On September 2, 2025, two individuals nearly lost their lives after receiving peptide injections at RAADfest in Las Vegas. As investigations unfold, we have sought insights from several medical experts on the broader implications of unverified “rejuvenation therapies.”

The Nightmare Scenario

The field of longevity has experienced slow advancements over the last quarter-century. Thus far, there are no approved anti-aging therapies, despite ongoing efforts to navigate through cumbersome regulatory processes. This stagnation has led many to experiment with therapies lacking thorough safety and efficacy testing.

Among the treatments gaining popularity are dietary supplements, off-label medications, and gene therapies, contributing to the rapid growth of longevity clinics and medical tourism. While the quest for a longer and healthier life is natural, it is crucial that individuals are well-informed about the associated risks and benefits.

The media's tendency towards sensationalism creates an alarmist culture surrounding the self-medication phenomenon. However, many longevity enthusiasts argue that substantial preclinical evidence supports some experimental treatments, advocating for more autonomy in healthcare choices.

A prevalent concern remains: the risk of potential fatal consequences associated with unproven therapies. The disastrous scenario often debated is that, eventually, a patient may die after receiving a rejuvenation therapy, leading to intensified scrutiny from regulatory authorities and public skepticism, ultimately undermining the legitimacy of the longevity movement.

The RAADfest Debacle

Such fears nearly materialized at the Revolution Against Aging and Death Festival, commonly referred to as RAADfest, recognized for its vibrant and engaging atmosphere. This year, it introduced the “RAADclinic,” a venue featuring various longevity diagnostics and therapies, including peptide injections.

On the final day of the event, two women, aged 38 and 51, were rushed to a local hospital after receiving these injections. Reports suggest that they exhibited symptoms such as swelling of the tongue, difficulty breathing, and elevated heart rates. One of them was intubated upon arrival, while the other was unable to communicate with medical professionals.

Additionally, the Las Vegas police indicated that up to seven attendees sought treatment following peptide injections at the clinic, aligning with the claim that six individuals received the treatments.

Potential and Risks of Peptides

Peptides, consisting of short chains of amino acids, have therapeutic potential but also inherent risks. Compared with proteins, peptides are typically more stable and less likely to provoke immune responses. Approved peptide-based therapies exist, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic, but many remain under development.

Nevertheless, peptides can pose risks such as immunogenicity and unintentional binding to non-target sites. Dr. Matt Kaeberlein, a leading geroscientist, approached this incident with caution, outlining the disarray of unapproved therapies prevalent at the conference.

The Regulatory No-Man’s-Land

The regulatory landscape surrounding peptides remains ambiguous. Holtorf Medical Group, led by Dr. Kent Holtorf, provided treatments at the conference but did not clarify the peptides administered. Only three are noted on the clinic's pricing list:

  • BPC-157
  • Tymosine beta 4 (TB-4)
  • Tymosine alpha 1 (Tα1)

These peptides lack approval from the FDA, which designates them as compounded products, directing pharmacies to avoid producing them without adequate human evidence. Thus, they exist in a regulatory limbo, not classified as either permissible supplements or standard prescriptions. Misleading marketing exacerbates public misinformation about these therapies, making ambitious claims that often lack robust human data.

“Peptides, like other pharmaceuticals, require careful scrutiny—administration in casual environments magnifies the risk factors involved.” – Dr. Matt Kaeberlein

Future Directions for Longevity Treatments

The RAADfest incident has underscored pressing challenges in the domain of rejuvenation therapies. Stakeholders in the longevity movement face a dual imperative: the urgency to explore unverified therapies and the vital need to protect public safety and credibility.

We consulted various experts to assess the situation:

Matt Kaeberlein, Founder of Optispan

“There must be a distinction made between responsibly prescribed off-label drugs and unfounded supplements. Unapproved interventions pose significant reputational risks for practitioners and the entire longevity field.”

Reason, CEO of Repair Biotechnologies

“High regulatory standards are not inherently indicative of safety. Instead, they may contribute to inflated costs and delayed accessibility to beneficial therapies.”

Oliver Medvedik, Chief Science Officer, Lifespan Research Institute

“Navigating the spectrum of untested therapies is critical; patients must be able to discern effective treatments from those that offer no genuine benefit.”

Andrew Steele, Longevity Advocate, Author

“Caution in longevity medicine is essential. As public perception shapes the field's future, we must strive for providing valid scientific data for our interventions.”

Ivan Morgunov, CEO of Unlimited Bio

“The focus must remain on enabling access to therapies while maintaining transparency and informed consent, ensuring patient safety.”

Conclusion and Recommendations

As we assess the implications of RAADfest, our experts emphasize the need for:

  • Stricter regulations on health claims involving peptides and supplements.
  • Encouragement for ethical, evidence-driven research within the field.
  • Development of clear guidelines to navigate the murky waters of unproven therapies.

Establishing a credible framework for longevity medicine will not only safeguard patients but also enable the field to thrive and evolve responsibly.
